A dating agency designed to give adults with learning disabilities a better chance of finding love is set to be launched near Herne Bay. Care worker Holly Leadbetter decided to create Aiding Love after witnessing the difficulties many of her clients experience when trying to meet new people. She says that, currently, adults with learning disabilities living across the district have few opportunities to socialise with new groups of people and meet potential suitors. Ms Leadbetter knows of several couples who have met because they have been supported by the same companies, or attended the same day services or schools – but says many have not been so fortunate. The care worker founded the dating service – which will be open to people across the Canterbury district and Thanet – after one of her clients suggested the idea. Ms Leadbetter says users will be matched with another person once a month and be able to attend regular events. Read more: All the latest news from Herne Bay. A Cornwall dating service wants to help people with disabilities find lasting love and companionship. Hand in Hand was founded by year-old Cornish man Samuel Gillaspy who said he noticed a specific need for this type of service throughout his many years working with disabled people.
Sam, who lives in Penzance, has worked in the learning disability sector for over a decade and is trained in specialities such as epilepsy, first aid, mental health, autism and acquired brain injuries. But during his time he had noticed that often disabled people were unsuccessful in their search for long-term companionship and found it difficult to find love on mainstream dating apps. After a lengthy planning process, Hand in Hand was setup in and Sam began providing individual support and guidance – without the computer algorithm.
Sam said it was important for him to not have a database of people that can all access each others profiles because of the sensitive nature of the information discussed. Community reporter Lisa Letcher has set up a dedicated Facebook group for community news discussions, called ‘Unheard Cornwall’. To join the group click here and select ‘join’. Sam’s approach allows him to get to know clients and gain a deeper understanding of what the individual is looking for in order to match them up with someone like-minded.
He says he also provides constant one-on-one support as well as advice on finding a safe-zone for them to meet or he offers to join couples on the first date as a chaperone.

All You Need Is Love! Well, this may not be strictly true, although, we do all cherish our friendships, relationships and those we love. For some of us, finding that special someone is a little more difficult. This may be because that person needs support to access their community. They may not have developed the social skills required to form new relationships.
They may communicate in alternative ways, for example, they may not use words to speak, instead communicating through signs, symbols, gestures or technology. None of this alters the fact that we all have a basic human need to connect with others in a meaningful way. Our organisation is a user-led charity whose sole purpose is enabling disabled people to feel valued, included and to have real choice. Over the past 12 months, our beneficiaries have made it clear that a dating agency, which provides additional support and guidance, would help them feel included.

I’d like to learn about social networks and online dating for LD adults. I have a 22 year-old nephew in Los Angeles who would love to date. Any advice? Given the explosion in online dating in recent years, I did a quick search for sites that tailor to individuals with disabilities. There are a number of relevant websites to consider, but many of these seem to be geared towards individuals with physical disabilities.
However, your nephew might want to check out a few to look at some profiles. The Whispy directory has a good list, with everything from dating sites for the deaf and those for individuals with neurological disabilities. Depending on how your nephew’s learning disabilities and social skills affect his relationships, he may want to consider joining a group locally for adults with LD. Meetup is a good choice for finding groups locally.
Meetup is also a great way to find local groups that share your nephew’s interests. Meetup groups exist for just about any topic or interest you can think of — from monthly wine and cheese parties to knitting clubs to hiking groups or Scrabble players. Your nephew is sure to find at least one group in his area, and it can be a great way to meet people and make new friends. Finally, it might be helpful for your nephew to read a bit about how his learning disability and potential social skill deficits can affect his relationships and life beyond school.

Dating agencies for adults with learning disabilities are a vital service that help individuals have an active, engaging social life but more are needed across the UK. This research was part of a wider project exploring support for adults with learning disabilities to find loving relationships. Across the UK there are just a dozen such dating services , with only one covering London and none in counties such as Kent and Cornwall. They are all run as charitable organisations and rely on funding to operate.
The researchers profiled 10 of these services , nine in England and one in Scotland, speaking with staff, their users and their families, to inform the findings. Overall, they found that the agencies play a major role in helping members have an active social life. This ranges from facilitating social events for people to meet one another such as discos, meals and outdoor events, through to direct matchmaking between people for one-to-one dates.
All agencies also supported people with learning disabilities by acting as chaperones on initial dates and providing ongoing support and advice if relationships are formed. Furthermore, success is defined differently to a standard dating agency. Members seeing the act of dating itself as a success in itself , while dates that led to friendships, rather than relationships , are also usually seen as a positive outcome.
